Improved printing at monkkee: more freedom, more clarity

Announcement: PDF export will be phased out. Details are provided further below.

Many monkkee users keep their online journals over long periods. This often creates the desire to preserve entries not only digitally but also to print them or save them as a PDF—whether for archiving, rereading, or for very personal moments away from the screen.

For this reason we have fundamentally improved the printing function at monkkee.

What's new: Print entries – regardless of the view

The new printing function gives you more options to select entries you want to print or save. After selecting and clicking the print icon, a print preview appears as before. You can then print your entries or, depending on your operating system and installed additional software, convert them to a PDF.

Select across multiple display pages

Entries can now be selected across multiple display pages. That was not possible before, and printing was limited to a maximum of 30 entries. In the latest version this restriction no longer applies.

Select the desired entries and switch between pages freely. This way you can easily assemble any quantity. Since entries are sorted by date, for example you can collect the entries of a month or a year.

Select all existing entries

Another improvement is the ability to select all existing entries with a single click. First select all visible entries using the checkbox at the top left.

This feature already existed. However, if there are more entries than are currently displayed, a link is now offered to select all existing entries — including those not visible in the background.

This feature also respects searches by text, tags, or date. All existing entries that match the search criteria will then be selected. For example, with just a few clicks you can print all entries with a specific tag.

Redesigned print window for improved readability

In addition to the functional improvements, the print window has also been redesigned. The layout is clearer and better suited for printing and reading. The new print window also serves as the basis for further planned improvements to printing and export functions.

Announcement: PDF export will be phased out

PDF export will be phased out because modern operating systems and specialized PDF programs are significantly more powerful in this area than an integrated solution within monkkee. In particular, external solutions provide more reliable results for Unicode support \u2013 and thus for non\-Western languages and special characters \u2013 for stability with large amounts of data, and for handling various image formats. By discontinuing PDF export, the monkkee team can reduce the previous maintenance effort and instead invest specifically in an improved export process that will bring the new possibilities of the redesigned print function to future exports.

PDF export will remain available in the short term. The next step will be to mark it as deprecated and provide a reference to the modern alternative. Afterwards the function will be disabled. This will happen later this year, 2026. A precise schedule will be announced with the next article.
